‘Sarah Palin Is New David Brent’
Ricky Gervais has one thing to say to anyone missing his famous character in The Office. Just watch the US election instead.
The comic sat down to talk about his new film Ghost Town but instead spilled forth on his US success and why Sarah Palin is the new David Brent.
So the world’s falling apart, the economy is a mess, and that house you’ve been slaving away to keep is now worth about the same as a bag of peanuts.
But if ever there was one piece of shining positivity to lift us through the gloom it’s the news that a funny chubby man from Reading has now become a bona fide movie star. It puts your faith back into the world.
The man who graduated from The Office to Extras to a few big-screen cameos, and picked up quite a few awards along the way, is now leading man material.
So I’ve been told I’m interviewing the dashing lead romantic new Hollywood star – have I come in the right room Ricky?
“There’s no way you were told that,” he says. “There’s no way the word dashing was brought up and you know it – you look more like a film star than me, but I’m round and cuddly.”
Ghost Town is a charming old-school Hollywood kind of movie. Ricky was given plenty of leeway to change the script and add in a few ‘Gervais-isms’.

He’s befriended by one such spirit played by Greg Kinnear, who wants Ricky to stop his widow re-marrying. It’s the sort of thing you can imagine Frank Capra directing with Jimmy Stewart.
Ricky has just finished another film in America, This Side Of The Truth will be with us next year, a movie that he has written, starred in, and co-directed.
He is also working on an ongoing follow-up to Extras and as further proof that his life is unflinchingly surreal these days, in a few weeks he’ll be playing a benefit gig in New York, alongside Bruce Springsteen.
“Its crazy isn’t it,” he laughs. “It’s not like a career, it’s like I’ve won a competition!”
Of course that puts him in the States at exactly the same time they’ll be choosing a new president. Does that excite him?
“I’ve never been interested in politics until now,” he explains. “I am so following this election, and I don’t know if it’s because Obama is so charismatic and we could have the first black president.
“And Sarah Palin is David Brent. She is! There’s so much comedy value in watching her talk. It’s going to be exciting.”
