McCain: I Slept Like A Baby

John McCain has turned funnyman on US television, cracking jokes about his election defeat – but still standing by his running mate Sarah Palin.

John McCain showed humour on Jay Leno’s The Tonight Show

Speaking on the Jay Leno show and proving he has not lost his sense of humour, he joked about a “personality flaw” that cost him the US presidency.

It was his first interview since he was knocked out of the race for the White House by a triumphant Barack Obama.

The Arizona senator told how he has been sleeping “like a baby: sleep two hours, wake up and cry, sleep two hours…” after losing to the Democratic nominee.

And Senator McCain went on to tell The Tonight Show host Jay Leno that the first thing he and his wife Cindy did on the day after losing was go out to buy a coffee –

but “not the newspaper”.

He had much praise for his running mate Governor Palin, saying she is “a marvellous person” and part of “the next generation of leadership in our party”.

“I am so proud of her and I am very grateful she agreed to run with me,” he said.

“She inspired people – and she still does. Really I couldn’t be happier with Sarah Palin.

“She is going back to be a great governor. I think she will play a big role in the future of this country.”

Elaborating on his defeat, he admitted the failure had been “tough” on his family, but said he wished Mr Obama well.

“The last thing Americans want is a sore loser,” he said.
